They're horribly unreliable. Mine has been shit since I got it six months ago.

I don't have one, but I have used them plenty of times. How is yours unreliable?

Things go wrong with it all the time. The "genius" at the Apple Store kept insisting on doing pointless software checks for an hour, even though I need a replacement computer.
If you get one,
Get. Apple. Care.

I might be joining you soon. My 5 year old macbook pro is starting to have trouble reading when something is in the usb ports. But I'm so sentimentally attached to my macbook! We've been through so much together and I can't just sell her! But anyways, cograts on your new mac!

Does anyone have a read on how long Macs are supposed to last? I have a mid-2009 15" MPB and the screen has started to separate from the casing (a common issue, based on some Googling).
I mean, I reckon that one could keep replacing batteries and upgrade the hard drive to SSD (and glue the fucking screen back in place - WTF, Apple?) and do periodic clean ups, they'd go for more or less ever...

It's better to spend the same money on a PC with specs that would embarrass ORNL.

Or a used machine for $300 that has an i7, 8GB RAM, and threw in my own SSD... and it performs just as well as a new high end business laptop does.

Define things going wrong? I fix computers as my day job, so I may be able to offer some assistance.

I'm on my third MacBook/iBook, typically I get about four years out of it then update in the name of speed/storage space. I had my previous one from January 09-January 14, wiped it, updated the OS, and gave it to my mom. It's been running well for her all year. There were some cracks in the plastic case and some of the plastic edging around the keyboard and screen were missing, but the screen wasn't at the point of separation yet.

My company replaces them every three years, if requested. I have a MacBook Air kicking around that was first issued in mid-2011 and it's still working well.

My current MBP is 5 years old and still going strong. It really depends how you take care of it

My biggest issue was how long it was taking to render video in Final Cut Pro. 14 hours to render a 20 minute rally stage just wasn't cutting it.

I quit using final cut and aperture for video and photo processing, the software itself isnt good. Use anything Adobe instead

Yeah, I know. I'll make the switch eventually. I'm just lazy and FCP is familiar.
